lyrics

When God said,
Let there be light,
Did the universe shake and tremble
as white pierced through
the blackness
this void of nothingness,
with the words,
Let there be?

The prophet Jeremiah,
who had fire in his heart,
a burning shut up in his bones,
spreading like wildfire flame,
destroying forest and field,
he could not hold back.
He was consumed with light,
with speaking what was right.

Like all those prophets who foretold
Your coming birth,
this promise fulfilled.
Your story wrapped in wonder of baby boy miracle,
dispersing the gloomy clouds of night,
putting death’s dark shadow to flight.
No longer concealed,
we reveal
this hope we hold with hearts full:
that He dispels with glorious splendor
the darkness everywhere;
So we repeat:
Let there be.

Even that Advent
star of wonder,
star that perplexed
and distressed
those who could not see your coming.
The light enveloped Bethlehem night
as they waited in cave cold,
for this blooming rose,
for this long awaited promise of old.
Dispelling the darkness,
You came with bellows of birthing pain,
with the messiness of motherhood,
with the fulfillment of prophets from long ago.

When she held you that first time,
light in the darkness--
You were baby boy bundled
in soft skin,
hair matted down to a sheen
and lungs that exhaled newborn cries,
bringing us light through our tears.

This miracle child who would save the world,
this grace-giving,
sacrificial-living,
servant-forgiving,
The One, who showed us how to fight
by giving up his life.

This creation story,
This Advent night,
This baby born
making all the broken things right.
This is the story of every lost soul
who longs for the cry of
Let there be light.

Your Word drenched in fire,
set our hearts aflame,
to rage against the night,
to hold in our hearts this light,
this star of wonder,
this baby boy of hope.
We cry out at your birth,
with all the earth:
Let there be light.

Let
there
be.
